The Devil Gets Depressed
What happens when the devil looks at humanity and realizes that human beings have become more cruel and destructive than he expected?
The Devil Gets Depressed is a digital scribble artwork by Riyad Kishi built around this dark irony. Instead of portraying the devil as powerful or victorious, the artwork captures him in a moment of emotional collapse: exhausted, disappointed, frustrated and depressed.
The idea is simple but unsettling. The devil, traditionally associated with temptation and corruption, discovers that humans are capable of extraordinary cruelty without even needing his influence.
“Why did humans surpass me?”
A Devil Who Has Lost His Purpose
The devil is not celebrating evil. He appears defeated by it. His inward posture suggests psychological exhaustion. Surrounded by darkness, he becomes less a source of corruption and more an observer of human behavior.
War, violence, hatred, betrayal, greed and destruction have reached a point where even the traditional symbol of evil seems to question his own relevance. If humanity can become more demonic than the devil himself, what role is left for him?
Scribble Art as Psychological Chaos
The artwork was created digitally using a scribble-art technique. Hundreds of overlapping lines gradually form the body, horns, muscles and shadows. The chaotic lines are not merely a drawing method; they represent psychological disorder.
They collide, repeat and disappear into darkness like thoughts inside a distressed mind. From a distance, a recognizable figure appears. Up close, the figure dissolves into fragments. This tension between order and chaos is central to the work.
Darkness, Red and Light
Black dominates the composition and creates a feeling of isolation. Red lines move through the darkness like nervous energy, anger, danger or emotional disturbance. White lines reveal fragments of the body before disappearing again.
The glowing light beside the devil introduces the strongest contradiction. Light is normally associated with hope and revelation. Here, it illuminates the devil at the moment he discovers something darker than himself: humanity.
When Humanity Becomes More Demonic
The real subject of the artwork is not the devil. It is human behavior. The devil becomes a visual device for asking whether evil always needs someone to create it, or whether human beings can produce it entirely on their own.
His depression becomes dark satire. He spent centuries trying to corrupt humanity, only to discover that humanity may no longer need him. Humans have surpassed the teacher.
The Question Behind the Artwork
If the devil observed humanity today, would he still consider himself the master of evil — or would he discover that humans had already surpassed him?
The tangled scribbles, red energy, black emptiness and dramatic light come together around one moment: the moment when the devil realizes that humanity may have become more demonic than he is.

VIEW / COLLECT THE ARTWORK →
